Increasing Sales: 3 Tips
The ability to increase sales is on every business owners mind. A strong and determined focus on three key areas of a business will result in an increase in sales.
Tip #1 - Focus on Your Current Customer
The current customer is the most important asset a business has. The current customer already has felt the value of the product or service offered. A focus on sales to this segment of the business is often neglected. The current customer must be understood and properly measured. All businesses must be able to measure the following:
- Number of customers at all times
- Percent of customers who remain customers
- Referrals from customers
- Data on customers to help understand who they are
This information will allow a business to properly measure their customer loyalty. The loyal customer will buy often from a business and bring in new customers. A good business does not take these loyal customers for granted but rather understands their importance and is constantly striving to find new ways to provide them value.
Tip # 2 - Target Market
The target market of the business is critical for focusing on sales and the ability to gain market share. A business must know who the target market is. A major responsibility of any business is to clearly define the target market. This is an easy concept in theory but becomes complicated in application. Here are a few helpful hints.
First, clearly identify who is the target market. The most common mistake is to make the target market too broad. All businesses have limited resources. The application of these resources must be utilized strategically and intelligently. Sales must be made to an identifiable group of businesses or people.
Often the information obtained from the data on current customers will help in this process of identification. Know who will gain value from your product or service. Market to specific geographic locations rather than all over the place. Finally, do not be afraid to niche your target market. Attorney's are a great example. A general law practice is much more difficult to market than a family law practice in a specific geographic location like Chicago, Illinois.

Tip #3 Product/Service Constant Improvement
Sales are a direct reflection of your product and/or services The market place is in a constant state of change. A business must stay up to date with this by being in a constant improvement mode of business. A smart business owner must maintain competitive advantage by demonstrating value to the current and prospective customer at all times.
This can be accomplished in numerous ways. First, products and services must be constantly improved upon with a well designed process internal to the business. Offering more to customers is a great way to increase sales. However, sometimes providing less at a value that is acceptable to both parties is a great strategy. A great example is a marketing company that designs marketing materials. This company can add value to a business owner by assisting on a smaller project that adds value at a smaller cost.
Increasing sales takes a focused approach. These three tips will assist any business in creating the appropriate plan to obtain the desired result.
