TIP # 1 Create A Compelling Vision

Goals must be set in alignment with your overall strategy for accomplishing your Vision and Mission. A strategic business plan starts with the overall vision and mission of the business. The following questions need to be asked and answered:

  • What is it you are trying to accomplish from a big picture point of view in your professional life?
  •  What are you looking to accomplish for your personal life?
  • What strategies are you going to utilize to accomplish these things?

Creating a compelling vision will add energy and focus into your efforts. Vision statements are not just for business. They should be utilized for personal life goal setting also.

TIP #2 ALIGN GOALS TO THAT VISION

Goals that are set in alignment with your vision for professional and personal accomplishment will result in an improved quality of life. This will allow you to focus on those areas of your life that bring you the most value. The ability to make decisions based on priorities that you yourself set will add clarity and direction to your life.

Goals that are accomplished not in alignment with a vision have little meaning and do not bring lasting value. Goals in alignment to a vision have meaning and bring great value. Goals in alignment with a vision allow for actions and activities to be planned that move a person toward their vision in a strategic and systematic manner.

Learn From Failure

TIP #3 Be Accountable and Accept Failure

Goals should be set utilizing the SMART (Specific, Measureable,Aligned, Realistic and Timely) methodology. It is critical to understand that highly successful people do not always accomplish every goal they set. People are not perfect and plans do not always work as designed. The key is to learn from failures so the same mistakes are not repeated. Additionally, learning what did not work often times will bring clarity to what might work. Learn not to fear failure but to learn from it.

Finally, goals to be accomplished will require accountability. Holding yourself accountable for actions and inactions is crucial to obtaining success. This is easier said than done.  Many people will choose to engage an accountability partner or group to assist in this area. Others may choose to utilize a mentor and or an executive coach.

All of these have merit as long as the relationship actually accomplishes the goal of holding another person accountable.  Goal setting is a key to success. Accountability is a cornerstone of effective goal setting.
